More Than a Border: What Original Frames Reveal About Highwaymen Paintings

The frame surrounding a painting may seem secondary to the artwork itself. With early Florida Highwaymen paintings, however, the frame can become part of the story. Its materials, construction, condition, and appearance may offer clues about when and how a painting was prepared for sale.

Many Highwaymen artists needed to create attractive, affordable paintings that could be transported easily and sold directly to customers. Their practical framing methods supported the unique system of production and roadside sales that became an important part of the history of the Florida Highwaymen.

An original frame should never be treated as proof of authenticity on its own. Nevertheless, it may provide valuable historical context when considered alongside the painting’s signature, materials, technique, subject, and provenance.

Why the Highwaymen Framed Their Own Paintings

In the movement’s early years, many artists worked outside the traditional gallery system. They painted Florida landscapes, framed the completed pieces, loaded them into vehicles, and brought them directly to prospective buyers.

A finished frame made the painting more appealing and ready to hang immediately. Buyers didn’t need to take the artwork to a frame shop or spend extra money before displaying it in a home, office, motel, or business.

The frames also protected the painting’s edges during transport. This was especially useful because artists often carried multiple paintings from one location to another as they searched for buyers.

    Common Characteristics of Early Frames

Early Highwaymen frames were generally made from affordable, readily available materials. Decorative wood molding—often associated with interior trim or crown molding—could be cut, assembled, and painted to create an attractive border without the expense of custom gallery framing.

    Color and Construction

Frames were frequently painted in light tones such as white, cream, silver, or gold, although their appearance varied. Some featured multiple colors or painted accents that complemented the landscape.

    Collectors may notice:

    • Mitered corners with simple construction
    • Visible nails, staples, or other fasteners
    • Hand-painted surfaces or aging paint
    • Wear consistent with the painting’s age
    • Proportions and materials associated with the period

These characteristics can be interesting, but none is exclusive to genuine Highwaymen art. Frames can be reproduced, replaced, repainted, or paired with a different painting.

Can an Original Frame Help Authenticate a Painting?

A period frame may support a painting’s history, but it cannot authenticate the artwork on its own. A convincing frame could surround a misattributed painting, while an authentic painting may have been reframed because the original frame was damaged or no longer suited the owner’s décor.

Proper evaluation requires looking at the work as a whole. The signature, brushwork, color choices, composition, painting surface, subject matter, and the artist’s known traits all deserve careful consideration. Collectors can learn more by reviewing guidance on identifying Highwaymen paintings without provenance and avoiding forgeries and misattributions.

Should an Aging Original Frame Be Replaced?

An old frame may show chips, discoloration, loose corners, or other signs of wear. Before replacing it, collectors should consider whether it remains historically connected to the painting.

When possible, careful stabilization may preserve more of the artwork’s original character. Any repairs should be handled sensitively so they do not erase evidence of the frame’s age or construction. Owners should also follow appropriate practices for protecting Highwaymen paintings in Florida’s climate.

Ultimately, the painting remains the primary work of art. Yet an original frame can be more than decoration: it may help tell the story of how the painting was made ready, transported, sold, and enjoyed.
